8.3 rating for Culture, based on 52 reviews
Please describe your company's culture both in the office and after hours. Let us know about the structure and hierarchy, cooperation and teamwork, and socialising amongst colleagues.
My team in particular has a good culture, everyone is social and friendly. However I have worked across various teams in the company where that is not the case. It varies wildly from team to team.

Socialising amongst colleagues is okay, aware some teams aren't that good. Current team has good teamwork and cooperation.

In office culture is quite good. Campus is large with lots of places to sit and chat with team members and colleagues. Throughout the week, there are always talks on about various topics that you can attend. Generally collaborative with people moving around to talk to other colleagues frequently. Office is quieter some days as more people work from home. Totally packed on Wednesdays as everyone comes in. I've also enjoyed the work outings throughout the year. The company event orbital was very well planned with free food and drinks all day and lots of talks from interesting people. Outside of working hours there is some interaction with my fellow graduates. We communicate through a group chat and organise a variety of activities through the year.

Limited activities outside of work in my experience, but dependent on team. Structure can be quite top-heavy but lots of opportunity for movement within and across teams / career development

The work is very flexible, 38 hours a week between 7am and 7pm, whichever is easiest for you. I typically do 8:30am to 4:30/5pm. Inter team cooperation is strong, however there can be inter-business unit rivalries. Colleagues are typically friendly with each other and go out occasionally.

It is very inclusive, I have never felt discriminated against, even when I was working in a male-dominated space as a woman. People collaborate well as a team, and also understand how to take ownership of their own work.

Get to work closely with my team and regular meetings ensures any issues can be escalated and i feel supported. Very positive and nice team, everyone willing to assist you when you need. Cyber Leadership is approachable and happy to talk to you

Overall Optus have a lot of employee events and there is always something happening in the office. You feel included from day one and there is lots of opportunity to learn more as a general knowledge. I have struggled in my team and actual work feeling included and like I am contributing to something important.

Both in the office and after hours, the culture is great. I feel as though I am very motivated to do well here.

People are great! Support is everywhere! We have a compulsory office day (Wednesday) which everyone comes in and everyone uses it as a day to properly network and catch-up to fellow colleagues. It's also a day where we have an event on every Wednesday whether it is a conference talk on campus or a workshop that we can further develop our skills.

It is very flat in terms of hierarchy in my business unit. Senior leaders are extremely approachable and supportive. Strong culture of collaboration within my business unit.

As a large organisation, there are many things that are done to keep employees engaged. There are weekly organisation wide sessions called TGIF that keep everyone across what is happening throughout the business. There is our yearly Optus event that brings together everyone from Optus across the company to align on our strategy and learn and have some fun while we are at it. Throughout the year there are many other events, whether it be fun, informative or learning sessions. People at Optus are quite nice as well and overall good when it comes to cooperation and teamwork. Being located where we are there are sometimes after hour events but not as much as some city firms might experience (I would imagine).

My company first and foremost really values diversity & inclusion. We welcome people from all walks of life, and we view diversity and inclusion as a key component of our brand, and the way we operate. The vast majority of people are welcoming and friendly, and are keen to get to know each other. Most have a team first mindset and we are willing to put in the hard yards for one another to deliver a strong outcome. We do tend to have a vertical hierarchy, which requires you to know the correct channels to go through in order to present ideas.

Company culture is good in the office and after hours, some teams seem to get lunch and drinks after and promote external events such as volunteering and team building. Structure and hierarchy is okay but it can be difficult to work with those in higher positions due to their calendar being booked out consistently with meetings. Seems like additionally those in higher positions are working much longer hours regularly, often I see people online at 8AM and not logging off until after 6:30PM. I've heard some other grads' managers go back online late at night to do extra work due to load requirements which doesn't seem sustainable and healthy long term.

The culture can be vibrant and exciting, the teams have semi regular catch ups outside of work where work is rarely talked about (unless the catch up is to celebrate something at work). With this comes a sense of formality and informality, regardless of where you are you can crack a joke and enjoy the time with your colleagues. However the structure of the business is where things somewhat fall apart. Each department has their own KPIs and tend to be siloed with this comes unnecessary tension when attempting to worth with other departments.

The culture at the company is fairly good, however with regards to taking leave at the end of the year, the pressure that is placed on employees is very high and is of really poor behaviour, as employees should have full autonomy on when they are able to take leave, to meet the diverse lifestyles spread across Optus. In my team, the structure is a bit unbalanced with their being a lot of people under one person. Ideally the spread of engineers under the manager should be split up so that there is more focus and direction with regards to the work being conducted in the subteams.

Culture is dependant on team, some teams have excellent culture while others is just ok. Teams being split across the state also doesn't help with team culture.

The culture is great. The position in the hierarchy doesn't impact the how heard people's opinions are. Members of the wider team are always happy to give advice or help out on projects that they have expertise in. The social culture is also great, people are always happy to socialise with anyone in the team and there are relatively frequent events.

The culture is ok - good but could be better. Some teams I have worked with have been a pleasure to work with in terms of cooperation and teamwork, others have been difficult with bare minimum cooperation. The social aspect of working at Optus is good, most people are friendly and open to catching up.
